Having “Mr. Everything” point guard sophomore Trey Burke selected as the 9th pick in the first round of the recent NBA Draft was a bittersweet moment for John Beilein and U-M fans; on one hand it’s always good having guys a part of your program talented enough to leave early for the NBA, but it’s never fun losing them as underclassmen.

But fear not Wolverine fans help is on the way. Just like when Darius Morris decided to bolt to the NBA three years  ago leaving the position to an unknown  and unproven 3* point guard from Columbus OH to run the team, Coach Beilein will have another incoming lead guard to build his team around for the next couple of seasons, 2013 4* Derrick Walton out of Chandler Park High school in Metro Detroit. This time the circumstances are a little better than when Burke took over because Walton will have plenty of talent around him. That help includes returning sophomore guard Spike Albrecht, who many feel will begin the season in the starting line-up, on the team to help ease the adjustment of going from a top prep star in the state of Michigan to a contributing piece on a Big 10 program.

Knowing that he wont have the same burden Trey Burke has not stopped this young man from going hard in the off-season. Prep Hoops TV was able to get footage of the 6’0 170lbs guard putting in work prior to heading up to Ann Arbor this fall and its very impressive.

While he may not reach the levels of his predecessors, Walton is definitely on the right path of continuing the Coach Beilein lineage of Wolverine point guards (and Spike will definitely be included in this list after what he showed in the National Championship Game) who make a definite impact on the collegiate level and the University of Michigan  could very well be establishing itself as a destination for the top point guards in the nation.
